Inland, the new novel by Tea Obreht marks the return of an author many have been waiting for. Obreht has had to wait for this moment as well. The 2011 publication of her debut novel The Tiger’s Wife created an immense amount of excitement in literary circles and beyond, with her winning the Orange Prize among other honors and nominations. The writer was also part of Granta magazine’s Best Young British Novelists list in 2013, alongside now-famous names such as Zadie Smith and Samantha Harvey.
Overview About “Inland” by “Tea Obreht”
In her debut novel, Tea Obreht tells an imaginative and magical story about a girl. She must find her place between fantasy and reality. At times moving and other times humorous, Inland is a fun read that explores cultural differences creatively and originally. To begin, Ms. Obreht evokes a fantastical world with a tongue-in-cheek use of language that makes reading feel like playing make-believe. With descriptions like leather thong sandals (1) and Old Hag of Wisdom (2), it isn’t hard to imagine living in Inlandia—even if only for a short time.
Reviews About “Inland” by ‘Tea Obreht”
Obreht writes with a poetic turn of phrase, depicting picturesque scenes and characters with vivid detail. One story, in particular, Newborn Thing, was an absolute delight. The main character is a war journalist struggling to fit back into normal life after covering atrocities in Bosnia. The contrast between her devastating experiences abroad and her mundane domestic life is utterly heart-wrenching. I could not put down my Kindle until I had finished it; it was just so compelling.
