Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty was one of the most talked-about books in 2016 and with good reason. The book has been adapted into an HBO mini-series. It follows three mothers of first graders at a wealthy elementary school in the fictional town of Pirriwee on Australia’s eastern coast. When someone begins sending the mothers anonymous notes threatening that something bad will happen to their children. It uncovers deep resentments between the women. And forces them to confront their relationships and desires in different ways.

The story introduces a group of mothers at a school trivia night. Where tensions run high and emotions are easily provoked. The second half of Big Little Lies centers around another event from school. The annual kindergarten orientation program—where secrets are exposed and old wounds reopen. While there is no clear protagonist or antagonist in Big Little Lies. Each of Moriarty’s characters (with maybe one exception) is complex and real, with their own motivations and desires that are believable even if sometimes inexplicable.

Big Little Lies is an entertaining read, but it’s not without its flaws. One of these flaws is a lack of detail in certain areas, which can be really frustrating as a reader. The other flaw comes from some characters making extremely poor decisions that feel far out of character and seem like they were put in solely to move things along. Despite these issues, Big Little Lies works overall due to its fun characters and interesting storyline. If you’re a fan of chick-lit or lighter reads, I’d recommend checking out Big Little Lies. If you’re looking for something with more serious content, however, you might want to avoid it.

Liane Moriarty (born 1961) is an Australian author of chick-lit novels, who has also written two non-fiction books and two plays. She currently lives in Sydney, New South Wales. Her works are published under her full name Liane Moriarty. A TV series adapted from Big Little Lies is currently in production for HBO with Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon starring as lead characters. Two of her books have been optioned for the film: Three Wishes (2009) and The Husband’s Secret (2013). Her first play Daughters was performed at Griffin Theatre Company, Sydney in April 2013. In November 2013, it received its European premiere at London’s Southwark Playhouse.
