Overview About “In Order To Live” by “Yeonmi Park”

When Yeonmi Park was a little girl, she had everything she could ever want—food, clothes, toys—yet she was still unhappy. That’s because her family lived in North Korea under a brutal dictator. Every time she turned on her transistor radio, she heard the news of starving children and people being executed in prison camps. When she went outside, instead of playing with friends or other kids her age. She saw soldiers patrolling and kids training for war. No one could speak freely; everyone lived in fear.

Reviews About “In Order To Live” by “Yeonmi Park”

To Live is a harrowing memoir, told with directness and without self-pity. The author’s voice seems very authentic and often funny, not just when she’s telling stories about her family. But also in describing daily life in North Korea. She manages to capture both her limited perspective as a child, as well as what was probably an accurate view of things at that time for most people. And she makes clear how so many little things—like being able to shop for your food rather than having it delivered from a government distribution center or having electricity 24 hours a day—add up over time into something larger: true freedom.
