Invisible in a Bright Light is a fantasy novel, set in Oxford and London. It is written for children/young adults, but not exclusively so. The story is narrated by Wolf, who has left school with no qualifications and very little idea what to do with his life next. His only qualification for anything seems to be that he’s good at running away from problems. He thinks that magic should exist; he just doesn’t think it does anymore. But of course, it does. And being involved in magic makes you part of something much bigger than yourself. And forces you to make some choices about who you are and who you want to be going forward.

This book is beautifully written and it tells a wonderful story. The characters are very well developed and they have great personality traits which you can relate to and understand. This is an amazing book that I would recommend to anyone who loves stories about bullying, friendship, love, revenge, invisibility (the literal definition), etc… It’s filled with so many different themes. But each one comes together in such a beautiful way that every part of it blends perfectly into a cohesive whole. I highly recommend reading Invisible in a Bright Light! Whether you are young or old there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Sally Gardner is an award-winning author who has written around a dozen children’s books, some of which have been turned into plays and a musical. Invisible in a Bright Light, her first adult novel, is about growing up in an unconventional religious community. It was longlisted for The Women’s Prize for Fiction 2016. Her second adult novel, The Red Necklace, was longlisted for Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction 2017. And this novel won an LA Times Book Award 2017.
