The Screwtape Letters was written by C. S. Lewis in 1942 as a way to explain and prove his beliefs about the Christian faith to his friends who were atheists. The letters are between Screwtape, a demon, and his nephew Wormwood. An apprentice demon who’s assigned to advise and help two humans named Dick and Jane (how original). Throughout their correspondence, Screwtape educates Wormwood on how he can best manipulate Dick and Jane into embracing the sin in their lives. So that they will ultimately be eternally damned rather than saved by God when they die.

Written in a series of letters, The Screwtape Letters shows us what hell would look like if it existed and included Satan as an actual entity with a direct influence on human affairs. The novel is written from the perspective of Wormwood, an employee of Lucifer sent to Earth to bring humans over to his side for judgment (in other words, convert them). As he discovers what keeps humans from being evil already, he has his demonic nephew Screwtape write him letters explaining how he should go about tempting and manipulating these people into joining him so that they can then be condemned along with Satan and his followers when judgment day comes around.

Clive Staples C. S. Lewis (1898–1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, and Christian apologist. He held academic positions at both Oxford University (Magdalen College), 1925–1954, and Cambridge University (Magdalene College). He is best known both for his fictional work—especially The Screwtape Letters (1942)—and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics—such as Mere Christianity (1952) and Miracles (1947). His prolific writing career resulted in an estimated 90 million books in print which have been translated into more than 30 languages and sold millions of copies.[2] Michael Ward credits him with changing the nature of children’s literature.
