Mustard Seed is the story of Laila Ibrahim, who was born in Somalia and moved to St. Louis when she was four years old after her family fled the civil war in Somalia. Ibrahim’s life since arriving in America has been devoted to helping Somali refugees and immigrants integrate into American society and contribute to society through employment, education, and citizenship opportunities. Her book, Mustard Seed, provides an inside look at what it was like moving from Somalia to St. Louis as well as her insight into how things have changed and what challenges remain for refugees today.

The first sentence of Mustard Seed is It’s not easy being me. Written in free verse, Mustard Seed is a hard-hitting novel that deals with substance abuse, violence, family dysfunction, and redemption. Told from multiple points of view, it tells a compelling story about three girls: Precious, Priya, and Monique. As their lives become intertwined after suffering tragedies and broken relationships at home, they form an unlikely friendship through a suicide attempt. Although they are different on the outside – one is rich and pretty; one is poor and overweight; one has dark skin – there are parallels between their stories as each girl struggles to cope with her circumstances at home.

Mustard Seed is a wonderfully written book, part of an exciting new novel series. Readers will be drawn in immediately from page one. The author’s writing style is lyrical, and she paints vivid imagery with each word, making Mustard Seed an incredibly sensory experience. Each character has a unique voice that shines through on every page, something not many authors can accomplish with so many main characters. Even secondary characters are fleshed out and given their quirks and personalities—an impressive feat considering how large of a cast there is in such a short story.

Laila Ibrahim holds a BA in English and International Affairs. She is pursuing an MA in Literature at American University. Her first novel, Mustard Seed, was released with Spark Press in May 2016. Her second novel, The Road to Paradise, will be released on October 2nd, 2017. What do you do for fun? I read anything and everything I can get my hands on!
