The Shining Girls was amazing in every possible way. The novel, written by Lauren Beukes, caught my attention from the moment I read the first page of the story. Beukes has such an incredible talent and perspective on writing. Which is something that only comes from experience and hard work. She incorporated historical facts into her story to make it easier to understand what was happening throughout the novel. This book won’t disappoint you in any way; it kept me interested and full of questions right up until the very end!
Overview About “The Shining Girls” by “Lauren Beukes”
The protagonist, Kirby, is a traumatized young woman who is sexually assaulted and left for dead in a Chicago alley in July 1981. When she reawakens amid piles of trash and garbage, her hand reaches out of a dumpster like the discarded shell of some creature’s egg. She learns that she has been given a second chance at life. She finds herself able to time travel. But only back to Chicago in 1991, and armed with a knife that seems to have its life force. When people die under its blade, they cease to exist entirely. In these brief moments, before they disappear. Kirby can ask them any question imaginable: What happened on your wedding day? Why did you agree to rob that bank? But most importantly, who killed you?
Reviews About “The Shining Girls” by “Lauren Beukes”
a great read that is both engaging and thought-provoking. The characters are well developed, as is the plot itself. What makes it stand out from other books in its genre is that it is not an easy read–Beukes forces you to keep reading until you find out what happens next. When I reached the book’s end, I sat back and felt satisfied but also a little concerned about what would happen next to all of her characters. You know a book has reached its goal when readers care enough about its characters and plot to be concerned when they can’t continue reading; we’re left wanting more! A very strong 4 stars out of 5!
