Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill tells the story of Aminata Diallo. She was born into slavery and sold to a British couple when she was just an infant. But managed to escape from her owners and eventually return to her homeland of Africa as an adult. Aminata’s life provides an interesting contrast between the concept of freedom in North America and Africa during the 19th century. Her attitude towards freedom evolves through her lifetime. As she experiences first-hand the different definitions of freedom in these two countries. This book offers an important historical perspective on slavery and racism that’s often overlooked in contemporary American society.
Overview About “Someone Knows My Name” by “Lawrence Hill”
Ishmael Beah was an ordinary kid in Sierra Leone. He wanted to be a doctor, just like his father and older brother. But the civil war tore his family apart, and he found himself alone and homeless. He had no food, no home, no friends. Then he got lucky-in one of those stories that seem too good to be true. As a refugee in Guinea, Ishmael was adopted by an American family that helped him get medical training in New York City.
Reviews About “Someone Knows My Name” by “Lawrence Hill”
This book is a good read. It keeps you on your toes, makes you question some basic assumptions about life. And gives you hope that there are people out there who care enough to stand up for what they believe in. I like that it gives all sides of an issue, rather than shoving a particular philosophy down your throat. All too often we don’t like what someone has to say because it clashes with our viewpoints instead of just listening to hear what they have to say. I highly recommend this book as a great introduction to understanding issues facing Indigenous people in Canada. And also getting a glimpse into some of their histories. There are times when reading these things gets very hard. But I feel that is one of the reasons why it’s so important for us all to try.
