What’s it like to date as an autistic person? Helen Hoang, who also has autism, explores this question in her debut novel The Kiss Quotient. An engaging romance told from the perspective of Stella Lane. An autistic woman looking for love and understanding with Michael Phan. An aspiring accountant who falls for her despite their cultural differences. Published in August 2017 by Hachette Books, the novel is part of a growing wave of realistic portrayals of people with autism in literature and other forms of media, making it one of the best books about autism available today.
Overview About “The Kiss Quotient” by “Helen Hoang”
The best thing about The Kiss Quotient is its wonderfully authentic characters, and how real they feel. The story focuses on Stella Lane, a young woman with Asperger’s syndrome; and Michael Phan, a Vietnamese-American autistic savant. At first glance, Stella doesn’t seem to have much in common with Michael. He’s highly intelligent and has synesthesia (the condition where sounds or other sensory information triggers experiences in one sense modality, like a visual perception). For example, he would see music as colors—orange for jazz and red for classical. I loved that Stella took time to get to know him before jumping into a relationship; no unnecessary drama here!
Reviews About “The Kiss Quotient” by “Helen Hoang”
This book was amazing! It starts with Stella being diagnosed with Asperger’s. There is a scene where she is in college and has her first kiss and then can’t stop thinking about it, which helped me relate to her as I am on my journey with finding love. The characters are also very well developed so you get an idea of who they are and why they act as they do. It’s not just an I met a guy, let’s the make-out scene. But there is a lot of steamy scenes throughout the book that is quite enjoyable. If you want to know what happens between Stella and Michael, read The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang!
