First, let me admit that I’m a big fan of Khaled Hosseini. When he released his debut novel, The Kite Runner, in 2003, I was instantly hooked. Like many readers, I loved how he brought his characters to life on paper, how he made their struggles tangible and understandable. Sure, it’s not easy to relate to characters from a war-torn country. Where life is hard and everyone has turned his back on you. But it does get easier if you can manage to put yourself in their shoes for just a little while. What makes The Kite Runner work as literature is that Hosseini chooses every word carefully. Every sentence matters because there’s never too much or too little detail.

Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. He lived there until he was seventeen years old when his family fled to Pakistan during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. After spending four years in a refugee camp in Peshawar, they moved to San Jose, California, where he attended high school and college. He then completed medical school at UCSF and pediatrics residency at Emory University in Atlanta before practicing as a physician for several years.
