Review About Such a Long Journey

Such a Long Journey is a journey that starts in 1971 in Bombay (presently called Mumbai). The main character of the novel is Gustad Noble, who is a hard-working bank clerk, a Parsi community member. He devoted his life to the struggle of family peace and removing poverty from his family. His family includes a wife Dilnawaz, and three children.

Gustad Noble is living a happy life with his wife Dilnawaz and his three children. But suddenly he faces some serious resistance and health issues. His youngest daughter Roshan falls into a long-lasting illness and each coming day, her health situation becomes more alarming. On other hand, Gustad’s elder son Sohrab got admission to a prestigious Indian Institute of Technology but he fails to attend the college.

Unfortunately, it was 1971 and the luck was not with Gustad. India was ready to put a war on its neighboring country Pakistan to divide it into two regions. Eastern Pakistan was Bangladesh while Western Pakistan as Punjab, Sindh, KPK, and Balochistan. India planned to attack Eastern Pakistan Bangladesh and detach this part from Pakistan turn it into a separate and independent state.

In the meanwhile, Noble was terminated from the bank Job. It becomes very difficult for him to continue the life circle of his family. On one side his daughter was a hunt for long-lasting illness. On other hand, his son refused to continue his study. However, Noble succeeded to get a job in the army.

Major Bilimoria, an old friend of Noble who is a secret police member for Indira Gandhi, offered Noble a job. He recruited Noble and assigned him the duty to receive parcels and despite the money in the bank (where Noble was worked as a bank clerk) with a false name. Major Bilimoria was transferring/funding the black money to Eastern Pakistan. But after a few days, he was arrested and revealed all about Noble. In end, Bilimoria dies, but Noble survives.

About “Rohinton Mistry”, the author of “Such a Long Journey

Rohinton Mistry, An Indian-Born-Canadian Writer, was born on July 3, 1952, in Mumbai, India in a Parsi family. He attended St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, to accomplish his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics. In 1975, Rohinton migrated to Canada and get married to Freny Elavia. He got his job in a bank as well as started studying at the University of Toronto to obtain the degree of BA in English and Philosophy.

Rohinton Mistry’s books include Such a Long Journey (1987), A Fine Balance (1989), Family Matters (2002), Tales from Firozsha Baag (1987), Searching for Stevenson (1994), and The Scream (2006). He received numerous awards and recognition including the Hart House Literary Contest One Sunday, Annual Contributor’s Prize, Booker Prize, Commonwealth Writers Prize, Governor General’s Award, Trillium Award, Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction, and International Dublin Literary Award.
