I’ve been using Stewart for about 15 years. He is a great writer and his books have always been an excellent source of help with any math class I’ve taken. I like that he takes the time to explain concepts. And why certain things work instead of just stating them as facts. However, I also think it’s very important to use other sources as well. It might be good to buy another book if you need a quick reference on some basic facts. Sometimes Stewart explains things in such depth that it’s hard for a student in college (or later) to quickly lookup something in order to solve homework problems. However, once you understand what’s going on. Your knowledge will stay much longer if you learn it from one solid source rather than several broken ones.
About “James Stewart” the Author
James Stewart earned his Ph.D. from M.I.T. and has taught at Stanford, Columbia, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, and Ohio State University. Where he was a Professor of Mathematics until his retirement in 2007 to focus on writing textbooks full-time. He is a recipient of both teaching awards at Ohio State as well as an honorable mention for the research achievement award. In 2001 he was inducted into Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. And in 2010 he received one of two inaugural Mathematics Education Awards presented by SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics). The award honors mathematics educators. They have made a significant contribution to enhancing education within their fields.
