It was there that he formulated the plan that would put him on the path to infamy; the plan to raid the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), and use their weapons and captured slaves to spark a massive slave rebellion throughout the South and usher in a new era of freedom for African Americans everywhere. His group of fifteen men consisted mostly of former slaves from nearby farms who knew the surrounding hills intimately.

Overview About “The Good Lord Bird” by “James McBride”

The Good Lord Bird is a historical novel set in Kansas and Missouri during John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry, published in 2013. The narrator is a child named Onion, who believes he was rescued from slavery when, as an infant, he was stowed away on Brown’s horse. Onion has grown up to be an active abolitionist and wants to fight in Bleeding Kansas. This is his story. It also includes some of Brown’s actual raiders. It won’t take long for readers to realize that while many of them are real people, they’re not portrayed exactly as they were in real life.

They’re made into fictional characters with fictional motivations and reactions (with one exception). It makes for an entertaining tale that might leave you feeling like you’ve learned something about history at the same time—if you can keep track of all those names! I have to admit that I’m not well-versed in American history prior to 1865 so I don’t know how much liberty McBride took with reality or whether there were any liberties taken at all (I don’t think there were). But it certainly felt authentic—and it was fun!

Review About “The Good Lord Bird” by “James McBride”

I know what you’re thinking: another civil war novel? Don’t worry—James McBride’s The Good Lord Bird is an incredible novel, but it has a twist. The story follows a young slave, Henry Shackleford, who runs away from his master and becomes involved with John Brown and his crusade against slavery. The Good Lord Bird is narrated as a series of flashbacks as Henry is on trial for murder in later life.
