We live in an age of convenience, one in which technology has made it easier than ever to access information at a moment’s notice. Nicholas Carr points out that this might not always be such a good thing, and provides us with details on why we should all read books—even in the digital age—in his book The Shallows. Carr argues that our use of technology has resulted in shallow thinking, making it harder to read deeply and concentrate for long periods of time because our brains aren’t built to work the way we use them today.

Overview About “The Shallows” by “Nicholas Carr”

The Shallow is a book that should be read and digested with great care. The Internet, it seems, has changed us in many ways for better or worse. This book considers these changes thoughtfully and offers insight on how to live successfully in an online world without sacrificing authenticity and intimacy. It’s not so much of a novel as it is a warning shot across our bow; A call to action if you will. In today’s fast-paced, information-overloaded society there are few things more important than what we choose to consume and I think most people would agree that quality over quantity should be our mantra. The fact of the matter is that technology doesn’t have to come at such a high cost.

Review About “The Shallows” by “Nicholas Carr”

The computer has changed our brains; that’s what Nicholas Carr seems to be saying in his book, The Shallows. Through extensive research, he shows how our cognitive abilities have atrophied as we increasingly use technology to solve problems. He makes some interesting points and seems to acknowledge that technology can help us even while it harms us. But I don’t think he goes far enough. While I agree with many of his points, I think there are others where he is wrong or doesn’t go far enough. In short, if you want a good read on a controversial topic with an open mind (and perhaps an open Amazon account), then pick up The Shallows. If you want something more balanced or academic then look elsewhere. Here are my thoughts on each chapter
