The Innovators, by Walter Isaacson, is the book I will be reviewing today. In the book, Isaacson talks about the lives of many innovators in history and analyzes their personalities and mindsets to try to find commonalities among them that would give someone an edge when innovating. The book itself was first published in 2014. But it deals with events from as far back as the late 1800s. It covers innovators from many different fields, including electronics, computers, aviation, automobiles, and more.

Overview About “The Innovators” by “Walter Isaacson”

The first in-depth history of innovation from an era that ushered in today’s digital revolution: entrepreneurs and software developers who created computers, personal computing, video games, and more. In The Innovators, Walter Isaacson—the bestselling biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein—takes us back to where it all began. This is a gripping narrative about creative problem solving during one of history’s most remarkable eras. As Isaacson shows us how our relationship with technology changed over time. He also reveals how government regulation, competition between nations, university research priorities. And even chance meetings among innovators influenced these changes. He introduces us to Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron’s daughter and an early programmer; Alan Turing, whose code-breaking skills were essential to Allied victory in World War II; Doug Engelbart, who invented both the mouse and hypertext; Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, co-founders of Intel.

Reviews About “The Innovators” by “Walter Isaacson”

The Innovators is a history of personal computer development and then more generally about entrepreneurship in all of its forms. It’s about people that looked at an existing idea and decided that there was another way to make it better, or at least different. The innovators were not just engineers. But people from all walks of life were driven to find a better solution for something they were passionate about. What made them stand out from others was how they approached problems and found new ways to look at old ones. The development of an Altair 8800 computer kit turned into Microsoft being founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where MITS happened to be located, instead of Boston or Seattle where you might expect it today.

About “Walter Isaacson” the author of “The Innovators”

In his most ambitious book since he wrote Einstein, Walter Isaacson has written a gripping narrative about three generations of technologists who, from their garages in Northern California and their labs at MIT, invented an entirely new industry and ushered in today’s Information Age. In doing so, they created some of America’s largest fortunes, like Apple’s Steve Jobs and Google’s Larry Page. They also sparked a transformation in society as profound as any revolution since Gutenberg: our access to information is now instantaneous, portable, and free – with any device for everything from reading to music; 3D printing will soon allow you to print out a house; artificial intelligence will mean we can talk to our machines.
