I’m going to start this review with a warning: If you read The Fifth Season and you do not love it, do not read The Obelisk Gate. The Obelisk Gate is the second novel in N. K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy and, unlike the first novel, it leaves a few stones unturned and no plot points unexplored…The Fifth Season and The Obelisk Gate are brilliant novels by an author who has firmly cemented herself as one of the genre’s best writers, but they’re also very grim tales, dark and full of despair.

The Fifth Season is a science fiction novel by American writer N. K. Jemisin, published in 2015 and part of her Broken Earth series. It is set on a future Earth which experiences fifth seasons, catastrophic events similar to an ice age that recur every few centuries for an unknown reason (similar to seasonal cataclysms on Mars). The story follows three women, one from each previous novel in the series: Essun, Damaya, and Syenite, who all possess strange powers related to their magic-like abilities to control elements such as stone or lava; they are all also searching for a missing child and husband/father respectively.

The Fifth Season is a novel about oppression and revolution in a time of apocalyptic upheaval which is so detailed that each sentence reads like fine literature; where plot, character, imagery, and pacing blend together perfectly to create a story that feels simultaneously familiar and altogether new. It takes place on a continent called The Stillness which is divided into three countries: Gujaareh, Kissa, and Ainan along with other small territories scattered across its large expanse of land.

She is a novelist and short-story writer who lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and daughter. N. K. Jemisin is of African-American and Korean heritage, though she doesn’t write books featuring any sort of non-western protagonist; she focuses entirely on mythic fiction. Her writing has been described as Kafkaesque, kind of like if Kafka had read a lot of Ray Bradbury and Octavia Butler instead of Franz Kafka.
