There’s never been a better time to be alive, though you wouldn’t know it from reading science fiction. This quote from feminist writer Roxane Gay highlights what’s wrong with science fiction today. Too often the genre focuses on stories of white men saving the world or exploring new planets.

Overview About “Ancillary Mercy” by “Ann Leckie”

Ancillary Justice was a surprise hit when it was released in 2013 and won all sorts of awards. It seemed to come out of nowhere but it wound up changing sci-fi forever. Perhaps surprisingly, Leckie’s follow-up novel was released mere months after Ancillary Justice. The fact that Leckie would turn around so quickly is an interesting phenomenon given how complex her writing style is; her books are certainly not difficult to read but they are remarkably dense with worldbuilding and political intrigue. As a result, Ancillary Sword reads more like a prequel than anything else; indeed, you can probably read either novel without needing to read its sequel.
