I’m currently reading an engineering textbook, as I need to take some design classes in college. The book is Design of Machinery (5th edition) by Dr. Robert L. Norton, and it’s quite impressive so far. The book covers many topics such as what a machine is, how they work and how to analyze them. It also shows various examples from simple to complex machines in order to teach readers how to construct different machine components themselves rather than having their engineers do it for them. After covering all of these points, Dr. Norton then finishes off with chapters on kinematics, dynamics, and stress analysis -allowing you to fully understand how your designed products will function. One thing that impressed me about his approach was instead of simply showing you equations. He actually walked through problems step-by-step. This helped drive his point home much better than simply listing out mathematical relations!

Robert M. Norton is a Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, a professional engineer, and a Fellow of both ASME and SAE.
