Released in 2016, Black Water Lilies is a crime fiction novel written by French author Michel Bussi. Set in France, it tells the story of Géraldine Dufour’s murder. A banker, she had been reported missing for several days when her body was found floating on Lake Annecy. Despite having no signs of trauma or blood loss, investigators are baffled as to how and why she died. As they scour through months’ worth of security camera footage and conduct interviews with her family and friends. They are shocked to find that there were warning signs that were missed. Strange phone calls and multiple death threats that Dufour has received from an unknown source over the past two years.

Black Water Lilies is his third novel, but only his second to be translated into English. Written as a fictional account of an actual historical event, it begins with an unnamed narrator’s account of his travels in Europe. After leaving Barcelona for Paris, he decides to stop in Dijon on a whim and stay at what he believes is a guesthouse. While there, he meets two other travelers. American husband and wife Arthur and Mathilde Carruthers, both of whom are bound for Amsterdam. As he prepares to leave, however, they convince him to accompany them on their holiday to Auvers-Sur-Oise—the final resting place of Vincent van Gogh.

About “Michel Bussi” the author of “Black Water Lilies”

Born in 1958 in Tourcoing, Michel Bussi is a journalist and novelist whose first novel was published in 1998. A keen interest in history led him to write books based on real events. Black Water Lilies, which won several prizes including France’s Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire, tells of a series of murders that took place at Versaille in 1700. The book was inspired by a contemporary account of actual murders known as the affair of poisons and several famous historical figures are mentioned throughout. His books have been translated into more than ten languages, including English.
