About the Authors

Ferdinand August Heinrich Bé r from Prague and Munich is known as the father of modern statics. He was born on February 7, 1825. In 1850 he moved to Berlin University where he met Karl Jacobi. In 1862 Jacobi and Bé r founded Journal für die Reine und Angewandte Mathematik (Journal for Pure and Applied Mathematics) which later became a well-known publication in mathematics. He became its publisher while also maintaining a position at Munich Polytechnic as Professor of Applied Mechanics in 1897. He had several notable students including George Green, Arthur Cayley, and Josiah Willard Gibbs with whom he formed a lasting friendship that lasted until his death on March 24, 1905, in Essen-Werden (today part of Dortmund).
