The City of Brass is the second book in S. A Chakraborty’s Daevabad Trilogy, following the events of The City of Brass (2018). The story picks up immediately where it left off, with Nahri surviving a fight with Irsa and discovering that Dara has seemingly betrayed her and the rest of the Daevas. To make matters worse, Dara has also taken Nahri’s friend Ali with him, leaving Nahri alone and desperate to save both of them before it’s too late.

It’s set in 18th century Cairo, where Dar Shahrazad finds herself thrown into a group of powerful magic users—called Marines—who are rebelling against their King. Dar uses her gift to weaves stories that cause the Marines to follow her out of loyalty and convinces them to give up their powers and vow never to use magic again. They all return home on camels after spending years in hiding from one another but there’s no rest for Dar or for any member of her family as there are two people seeking revenge on them.

The City of Brass is an excellent book with a lot to offer fantasy readers. However, it does have a few flaws that might turn some people off from reading it. For those who don’t know, The City of Brass is set in 18th century Cairo and revolves around a young courtesan named Nahri who has an amazing talent for making healing amulets (this talent causes trouble for her early on). When someone close to her gets murdered, she decides to learn about her society’s magic to get revenge. From there on out, we follow Nahri as she trains and develops into one of Cairo’s best magical healers/detectives; but when secrets and truths are revealed, all hell breaks loose!
