This is a story about two sisters, Charlotte and Imogen. They have the pact to visit each other every year on their birthdays. When Imogen’s abusive husband prevents her from going home, Charlotte travels across the country to meet her sister in Boston. When she arrives though, she finds that Imogen has disappeared and left behind just a note from her favorite author: Be calm and carry on. Read along as they see how they can apply these words of wisdom to help them cope with their new reality. This was an intriguing read filled with mystery and it kept me guessing until the very end. Rules for Visiting is a highly entertaining novel about seven people from vastly different cultures, brought together. Because they are volunteered to visit a dying man to try and understand him. The book is humorous and well-written, and I was especially impressed with how much heart it contained; I felt sympathy toward each of its characters. The book describes each character well enough that you can imagine them fully as you read along. This book would appeal to readers who enjoy literary fiction or short stories. It could also be used in many AP courses as students will be required to find examples of themes or archetypes throughout literature; Rules For Visiting offers many great examples of these literary elements.

Jessica Francis Kane is a young adult novelist and poet. Her first novel, Knee-Deep in Paradise, was published in 2005 and received starred reviews from Booklist, School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and Publishers Weekly. In 2010 she was awarded an Excellence in Teaching Award from Bennington College where she is currently teaching writing courses. She lives with her husband (author Michael Lindgren) and two daughters in Plainfield Vermont.
