Psychology, both as an AP exam subject and as a discipline in its own right, has always been somewhat of an enigma to me. While I have taken courses on the topic. I have also actively participated in psychology clubs and other activities during my high school experience. In Psychology for AP, author David G. Myers describes psychology as a scientific study of behavior and mind and lays out a blueprint of critical thinking skills that can be used to analyze some of life’s most personal, difficult, and relevant situations. After an introductory chapter that provides an overview of psychology as a field of science and reviews how we use our senses to observe behavior in others and ourselves, subsequent chapters are organized around ten themes: biological bases of behavior; sensation and perception; learning and cognition; motivation, emotion, personality; mental disorders; social relations; development across adulthood; environmental psychology; research methods, statistics, research reports in psychology.

The book is organized into five parts, which correspond to broad areas of psychology—Part 1: The Study of Behavior, Part 2: Biological Bases of Behavior, Part 3: Sensation and Perception, Part 4: States of Consciousness and Cognition, and Part 5: Social Psychology. The chapters themselves are generally written at a sophisticated level; I often found myself rereading certain sections before fully understanding them. On top of that, some of them are simply long—such as Chapter 26 on Language in Chapter 11—which might put off students who aren’t interested in all facets of psychology or want a more bite-sized learning experience. However you feel about it, though, be warned that most things worth learning to take time and commitment!

David G. Myers is an award-winning professor of psychology at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He has authored or co-authored over twenty books, and his research areas include personality and intelligence, language development, and interpersonal relationships among adolescents. He is past president of both Division 7 of APA (the Society for the Teaching of Psychology) and NABT (the National Association of Biology Teachers). His interest in fostering more enjoyment of learning about psychology led him to found Inquiry Projects LLC with Steven D.
