If you loved The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, you’ll be delighted to know that she has released Circe. A standalone novel that focuses on the witch daughter of Helios and Perse (mentioned in The Odyssey). You may have heard of Homer’s telling of this tale in his book The Odyssey. Where Circe helps Odysseus and his men get home to Ithaca after they are shipwrecked. Here, you can read about how she came to be living alone on an island. And her life there as she meets Hermes, who tasks her with defeating some giants who are threatening Olympus.
Overview About “Circe” by “Madeline Miller”
Circe was once a nymph, then she became a witch and now she is nothing. Her beauty was her curse as it brought about many bad things in her life that were orchestrated because of her appearance. Eventually, Circe accepted her fate as one who would be shunned for all time. But not before using that gift to curse others who had wronged her. This book provides an in-depth look at life for women during ancient Greece. It will open your eyes to their plight and make you reflect on your actions towards women today. It is more than a story. And it is an awakening of sorts to how we think of those around us and our ability to change as time progresses.
Reviews About “Circe” by “Madeline Miller”
One doesn’t need to look far to find a review of Circe. But because I couldn’t stop thinking about Circe after I finished it. It felt like my duty as a fan of Greek mythology and an admirer of fiction, in general, to sit down and write my own. Though not without its flaws, Madeline Miller creates a compelling story from what has always been one of my favorite myths—the fall of Helios and his daughter, Circe. She plays with well-known characters (such as Odysseus) and molds them into something new while at the same time taking care to maintain their original spirit. It is funny, full of heartbreak and sorrow, but also full of life—just like every good book should be.
