To say I was pleasantly surprised by Water for Elephants is an understatement. I’m a huge fan of Depression-era historical fiction (Little Bee, The Help, A Thousand Splendid Suns). So when my mom recommended it to me I was excited to read another in that vein. What I didn’t expect was to love Water for Elephants as much as I did. The story takes place in America during the Great Depression and details how Jacob Jankowski fell from his life at Cornell University into a circus during its Great Migration (the 1930s) tour through California and Oklahoma. This book is well written with real characters that you care about, living in a setting that you feel like you know intimately by the end of it.
