The Girl in the Letter by Emily Gunnis is about a woman named Alice. Her life gets complicated when she meets her mother’s new husband, Jack. When she goes to meet Jack, he gives her a letter that was written to her mother but never sent. And she opens it up to discover that it was from Jack’s first wife. Anna had disappeared years before they met again. As the story goes on, we find out that Anna was murdered by her husband. And we follow the steps Alice must take to come to terms with this tragedy and prove that Jack killed his wife years before.

The Girl in The Letter is a debut novel by author Emily Gunnis that follows Stella. She’s had enough of her mother’s romanticized stories about her father. So when she receives a mysterious letter from a woman named Lucy, it sparks curiosity and leads Stella to spend her summer vacation trying to track down Lucy and find out who her father was. Along with her best friend Digby, they set off on an adventure filled with mystery and romance. Which makes for a fantastic summer read. While reminiscent of Jenny Colgan’s This Must Be Love and Sophie Kinsella’s I’ve Got Your Number. Both are still an absolute pleasure to read!

The novel was very compelling to read. It was hard to put down and I look forward to reading more of Emily’s work. You feel like you know what is going on right away, but then it twists again, so there is no way you can tell for sure. The characters were also very well developed as if you could see them sitting in front of you and telling their own story. I enjoyed how much detail she put into describing things and giving insight into what went on outside of scenes. Overall, I think that The Girl in the Letter is a wonderful story with great characters and depth that pulls readers along through a tragic tale that will make your heartbreak for at least two different people before it’s over.
