Leave Me is an emotional roller coaster and beautifully written. I fell in love with Mia right away, both because of her character and because of Forman’s writing style. This book made me laugh out loud, it made me cry until my eyes burned. It gave me a break from my problems without taking away from their importance. At times I felt like Mia was talking directly to me through all she went through, telling me about how she overcame what seemed insurmountable. Just as important as Mia’s journey is Adam’s perspective throughout it, as he watches his girlfriend change dramatically before his eyes.

This book was absolutely beautiful, powerful, and devastating. It describes in great detail just how much mental illness can affect a person and their family. Although I expected to like it, I don’t think I had fully prepared myself for all of its emotional intensity. Leaving Me had a profound effect on me emotionally, and it was exactly what I needed to read at that time in my life. Gayle Forman is a talented writer who had me completely captivated from start to finish, and her portrayal of mental illness hit close to home. The main character is struggling with depression as she deals with both losing her father and trying to find herself again as an adult.

Gayle Forman is an American novelist who, in her own words, writes brutal coming-of-age novels. They’re a little dark and not so rainbows and butterflies. Born in New Jersey to a Jewish family (she converted to Catholicism as an adult), she grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Middlebury College. She has written five books for young adults: If I Stay, about a teen whose parents are killed in a car accident; Just One Day, about another teen’s experience of spending 24 hours with his rock idol; and Just One Year, which chronicles one year of four friends’ lives.
