The Scarlet Letter is a romantic tragedy written by 19th-century American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The novel is set in 17th century Puritan Boston. It follows a woman named Hester Prynne who becomes an outcast after she bears an illegitimate child. When her daughter’s paternity is revealed. Hester wears a red A (for adulteress) to demonstrate that she committed adultery and must therefore be punished. Throughout her punishment, Hester maintains her dignity as she attempts to reconcile with society despite its harsh judgment of her character. She eventually marries Arthur Dimmesdale, who was revealed to be Pearl’s father. But they both die before being able to reconcile with their community.

The story takes place in 17th century Massachusetts where people belonging to a strict Protestant denomination lived. One of these individuals is Hester Prynne who is first seen walking through town with her eyes downcast and her finger holding her chin (Hawthorne 9-11). From these descriptions, it can be deduced that Hester had sinned and fallen from grace.

Nathaniel Hawthorne is a 19th-century American writer who often covered dark and mysterious subjects. Born in 1804, he graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine and worked at various jobs—including as a custom’s official—before publishing his first book of poetry, Twice-Told Tales (1837). It was there he learned about Puritan history. His short story collection Fanshawe (1828) is considered his first work of fiction. But it was his third book of poetry, Snow-Bound: A Winter Idyl (1862), that catapulted him to fame with its vivid depiction of New England life.
