An account of Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic expedition, which was to be the most ambitious polar expedition in history and instead became one of the greatest human survival stories of all time. Alfred Lansing’s Endurance is a gripping tale of endurance, heroism, and adventure that stands as one of the finest nautical narratives ever written, describing the experiences of one man and his crew on their quest to be the first to reach the South Pole.

Overview About Endurance by Alfred Lansing

The book documents Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. In 1915, one of their ships became trapped in pack ice, and after months of effort, it sunk. They spent five months on pack ice before launching a small boat to sail 800 miles to South Georgia Island. After three months on shore waiting for another ship to rescue them, they finally received help from a Norwegian whaling ship that brought them back home to England. This is an incredible true story of determination and survival against insurmountable odds set against one of history’s most challenging locations.

Reviews About Endurance by Alfred Lansing

To say that I was skeptical of a book that compared Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition to a race across America is an understatement. But, since reading ‘Endurance’, I have to admit I was wrong about it being just another story about freezing to death on an iceberg. What I didn’t expect was how interesting and exciting it would be from start to finish. Endurance tells of an ill-fated expedition that set sail in 1914. The ship (called Endurance) made it all but 200 miles before getting stuck in Antarctic ice for more than 10 months. When things finally go south, Captain Frank Worsley takes three men on a lifeboat journey over 700 miles for help, keeping them alive against all odds for 63 days until they were rescued.
