This book is the short version of Mahabharata. The Palace of Illusions revolves around a woman character “Draupadi or Panchali”, the daughter of the Kingdom of Paanchala. Draupadi is the wife of the five Pandava brothers, the rulers of Hastinapur. The novel starts when Draupadi is listening about her childhood from her Nani or Dhai Ma.
Illustrating the events from Ponchielli’s point of view, the author explores Ponchielli’s role in the conflict between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Banerjee’s novel “The Palace of Illusions” represents women with a strong character possessing admirable qualities. The Draupadi or Paanchali owns integrity, the inner strength of spirituality, and practicality. She loves to live with passion and courage in the environment and circumstances of danger and risky.
Draupadi or Paanchali put their utmost effort to fight against the social structure built around her. But men-dominating society enforces her to sacrifice her heart wishes and bow down to moral and spiritual values. First of all, she is being forced to marry Arjun. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an Indian-American author, born on July 29, 1956, in Kolkata, India. She completed her B.A. from the University of Calcutta and moved to the United States of America to attend complete her master’s degree from the Wright State University. She completed her Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley. The historical Novel based on384 pages was published in2008 by an award-winning novelist and poet Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. She is an Indian-American novelist. She gives voice to an aggressive and sensuous tale of fascinating stories from the Mahabharat.
Banerjee’s poetry and novel were published in 50+ leading magazines of the world. These magazines include The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, the Best American Short Stories, and the O.
